Is My Book for Black People? I Need Books to Read.

I haven't read a book since Diary of a Broke Chick and Addicted. I liked Diary but it too was boring. I was broke and ate dinner at the chicken man's house. Addicted even though it's about sex it was boring. He was handsome and I was beautiful. We are doing it long time. We reached our peak and it was good. We talked about our future. We have been married three years now.

There's no scenes. No colors, scents, taste, feel - no senses are involved. I cannot see the picture.

So can anyone suggest any authors that paint pictures. I think the last good Black authored b book I've read was There Eyes are Watching God.

If you like short stories try reading some J. California Cooper. She's an excellent writer and puts me in mind of Zora Neale Hurston. You may also want to read other books by Zora Neale Hurston. I used to be a big fan of Alice Walker although not all of her books are equal. I also really liked Toni Morrison, try her earlier novels first like Sula, The Bluest Eyes, Tar Baby or Song of Solomon. These are just a few to get you started. I don't read like I used so I have no idea of what's current on the literature scene. If you like black literature look for black writer's conferences. It's always a good way to find out what's new and pick up a few good books. That's how I came across J. California Cooper.

Thank you Quietspirit. I remember reading The Bluest Eyes many moons ago. I think short stories will be perfect for me.

I was going to suggest Toni Morrison too, though her books are difficult to read and always feel like work to me. Try Gabriel Garcia Marquez too - Love in the Time of Cholera. Okay, he's Columbian, not black, but he has a Nobel Prize and my very favorite.

Thank you Brunsli. I'm getting a tad bit discouraged about not having the same style or topics as the lastest authors. Hopefully different is wanted.
